Review by SCOTT SCOTT

The Cannonball Adderley Quintet's album, Country Preacher Live at Operation Breadbasket, is a must-listen for fans of jazz and soul music. Recorded live in 1969 at the Operation Breadbasket rally in Chicago, the album captures the energy and spirit of the civil rights movement.

The album opens with the title track, "Country Preacher," a powerful and soulful tune featuring Adderley's signature saxophone sound. The quintet's performance is tight and dynamic, with each member contributing their own unique style to the music.

Other standout tracks include "Hummin'," a funky and upbeat tune with a catchy melody, and "Walk Tall," a soulful ballad with a powerful message of perseverance and hope. The album also includes a cover of the classic soul song "You Don't Know What Love Is," which showcases Adderley's ability to infuse jazz with soulful emotion.

About The Cannonball Adderley Quintet

The Cannonball Adderley Quintet featured Cannonball on alto sax and his brother Nat Adderley on cornet. Adderley's first quintet was not very successful; however, after leaving Miles Davis' group, he formed another, again with his brother, which enjoyed more success. The new quintet (which later became the Cannonball Adderley Sextet), and Cannonball's other combos and groups, included such noted musicians as: * pianists Bobby Timmons, Victor Feldman, Joe Zawinul, Hal Galper, Michael Wolff, George Duke, Wynton Kelly, Bill Evans * bassists Ray Brown, Sam Jones, Walter Booker, Victor Gaskin * drummers Louis Hayes, Roy McCurdy * saxophonists Charles Lloyd, Yusef Lateef. The sextet was noteworthy towards the end of the 1960s for achieving crossover success with pop audiences, but doing it without making artistic concessionsn

Cannonball's first cousin was my middle school homeroom teacher. Years later I would regularly see them at a local jazz club. He was always introduced but he never spoke or played. Of course, Mercy, Mercy was played as he stood to a standing ovation.

Are my ears playing tricks on me or is there guitar on here? It's very faint in the right hand channel (like it's been recorded then dropped out of the mix). It starts during Nat's solo (around 1:05 and more prominantly from 1:55), seems to drop out for a while then returns during Zawinul's solo (5:06) and carries on during the closing head (6:03). There's no guitarist credited on the album and Cannonball didn't use a guitarist in the quintet during this period. I've not listened to the other tracks on the album to see if it happens anywhere else...

Oh my yes. When a jazz band gets your body moving that's the best. It's as close as you can get to when the cave people found out beating a limb on a log could get everyone dancing. It's worship, and it doesn't matter of what.

It’s funny that people comment on Cannonball Adderley “straying from the path.” I remember reading an essay some years back that said that Miles Davis’ first great quintet—SEXTET with Adderley—contained the two seeds of the future of jazz: Coletrane and Cannonball. Coletrane, it was suggested, went the spiritual and abstract route. Cannonball, on the other hand, was a TEACHER, literally, and that was a big part of who he was until the end of his life. The author described him as a musical “populist” so to speak. Hence, he was always ACCESSIBLE while remaining artistically creative and never out of touch with the masses, that he was a precursor to the likes of Grover and Ronnie Laws. Notice how often he talks to his audiences in live footage and in recordings. He even made some educational music albums. Consider that around this point he had bonafide HIT SONGS (like “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy”) and that he embraced Operation PUSH (“The Country Preacher”).

Every man's a planet and the props are there to get it
Insects roll together with the spirit in our orbit
Life, it comes & goes and you do not punch a clock
I don't take shit for granted, I think of Scott La Rock
Also of Tyrel and the battles at the borders
My cousins in the joint and the homeless gripping quarters
The forests are all shrinking, this deepens to my thinking
Don't cover up the nappy, be happy whatcha kinking
