Review by Anton Nichols

A Handful of Modern Jazz is a classic album featuring some of the biggest names in jazz: Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, and Miles Davis. Released in 1958, this album is a must-have for any jazz enthusiast.

The album features six tracks, each showcasing the incredible talent of these jazz giants. From the opening track, "Bloomdido," to the closing track, "An Oscar for Treadwell," listeners are treated to some of the most exciting jazz music of the era.

The chemistry between Parker, Gillespie, and Davis is evident throughout the album. They play off each other's solos and create an energy that is infectious. The rhythm section, featuring Max Roach on drums and Charles Mingus on bass, provides a solid foundation for the trio to work their magic.

One of the standout tracks on the album is "Relaxin' with Lee," a tribute to Parker's friend and fellow jazz musician, Lee Konitz. The track features some of Parker's most inventive and soulful playing, and the interplay between Parker and Gillespie is nothing short of breathtaking.

American alto saxophonist, composer and bebop pioneer (b. August 29, 1920, Kansas City - d. March 12, 1955, New York City, aged 34). Widely considered to be one of the most influential of jazz saxophonists, jazz musicians, and indeed musicians in general. Also known as 'Bird' (a shortening of 'Yardbird', Parker acquired the nickname early in his career with many contradictory stories regarding the name's origin). Parker was an extremely fast virtuoso and introduced revolutionary harmonic ideas into jazz, including rapid passing chords, new variants of altered chords, and chord substitutions. Parker died on March 12, 1955 in the age of only 34 in the suite of his friend and patron Baroness Pannonica de Koenigswarter at the Stanhope Hotel in New York City. The official causes of death were lobar pneumonia and a bleeding ulcer, but Parker also had an advanced case of cirrhosis and had suffered a heart attack. The coroner who performed his autopsy mistakenly estimated Parker's 34-year-old body to be between 50 and 60 years of age.

Is this the record in On the Road? Kerouac says "with Max West on drums". Who´s he? Never heard of. Maybe Kerouac means Max Roach, but on this recording it´s J. C. Heard on drums.
Anyway, a great record, too bad little Janet broke it.
