Review by Miranda Kester

Brotherhood, the eighth studio album by American rock band Doobie Brothers, was released in 1991. The album features an interesting mix of rock, pop, and country, showcasing the versatility of the band's sound.

The album's lead single, "Nobody," is a catchy and upbeat track that features the band's signature harmonies and guitar riffs. The song is a perfect example of the band's ability to write memorable hooks and catchy choruses.

Other standout tracks on the album include "Dangerous," a driving rock song with a bluesy edge, and "Rollin' On," a laid-back country rock tune with a catchy chorus and slide guitar solos.

Summary by Miranda Kester

Brotherhood is a solid album that showcases the band's strengths as musicians and songwriters. While it may not be as well-known as some of their earlier albums, it is definitely worth a listen for fans of classic rock and country-infused pop.

You know, it seems to be a no-win situation for bands that mount comebacks after years of inactivity and the Doobie Brothers are no different. After 10 years of little to no output they reunited with most of their earlier lineup and released Cycles and now Brotherhood. And yes, their music hearkens back to that earlier roots-rock style and they have been roundly criticized and denigrated for covering no new ground and little innovation. However, it seems that bands that do go away from what made them successful receive the same criticism for trying something new and not taking the safe route. On Brotherhood they use some different songwriters such as Jim Peterik of The Ides of March and Survivor among others and I am still not sure if the initial songs on Brotherhood really work and sound merely like so many 80s and 90s highly produced rock/heavy metal bands like Def Lepard and Van Halen. IMO the best songs on this record are the ones written and sung by original members Pat Simmons (Dangererous, Divided Highway, and This Train I'm On) and Tom Johnston (Excited, Showdown, and Rollin' On). Yes, they are imitations of their earlier hits, Rollin' On a clone of Long Train Running, but hearing these are almost a relief after hearing the outsider-penned songs like Something You Said, Is Love Enough, and Under the Spell. I am guessing here that these weak covers were included as the DBs didn't have enough original material to fill out the album. Too bad since the Simmons and Johnston songs are first rate and almost as good as anything they ever released. Almost. After this record the DBs didn't release anything for another 9 years and we are all worse off for it although they made 3 additional records in recent years.
